Brain-computer interface projects require a carefully scoped research team. The work can span signal processing, hardware, software, and domain expertise. Employers should define the research objective and development stage before writing an AI job description.

Match the hire to the research stage

A feasibility study may need experimental design and signal-analysis experience. A prototype may require device integration and real-time software. Do not describe a research role as a production engineering job unless the responsibilities actually include production delivery.

Assess rigor and collaboration

Ask candidates how they would separate a meaningful signal from noise and prevent information leakage in an evaluation. Look for clear discussion of reproducibility, data quality, and limits of the experiment. Cross-disciplinary communication is essential when researchers and engineers interpret results together.

Clarify boundaries early

Specify which team owns participant-related processes, device development, and research review. Candidates should understand the approved scope and the standards set by your relevant specialists. Avoid marketing promises about capabilities the project has not demonstrated.

Hiring checklist

  • Define the research question and success criteria.

  • Identify signal-processing and hardware dependencies.

  • Require reproducible evaluation practices.

  • Clarify supervision and cross-functional responsibilities.

A focused brief might ask for an engineer who can improve a signal-processing pipeline under a research lead. That is more actionable than seeking a general “AI expert” to invent an entire interface.
